Everyday Life

Transitioning to life in Kazakhstan as a student can be both exciting and overwhelming. Here’s what to expect once you land and start settling into your new home.

Arrival and Initial Setup
Most universities offer airport pickup services. Upon arrival, your first step should be registering your residence at the local Migration Police. Then, you’ll want to get a local SIM card (Beeline or Kcell are popular) and set up your student bank account.

Housing Options
Students can choose between on-campus dormitories and off-campus housing. Dorms are more affordable, typically costing $30–$100/month. Apartments range from $150–$300/month.

Food and Essentials
Kazakhstan’s markets offer a variety of fresh produce and household essentials. Local dishes like “beshbarmak” and “plov” are hearty and affordable. Students usually spend around $100–$120 on food monthly.

University Life
Universities often host student clubs, workshops, English discussion groups, and cultural events. These are great opportunities to make friends and build a professional network.

Integration and Social Tips

  • Learn a few phrases in Kazakh or Russian
  • Respect local customs and dress codes
  • Attend student orientation and networking events

Kazakhstan may feel unfamiliar at first, but soon it becomes a second home.
